How the Project Management MSc boosted a Sales & Marketing Directors Career

An interview with Phil Jefferies

In partnership with York St John University, we have created the online Project Management MSc. The MSc is a great way to help develop the skills and knowledge you need to manage projects in a range of environments. The course offers the chance to learn about the principles and practice of project management, as it introduces you to the tools and techniques needed to succeed.

Did you know, it is now also a recognised assessment for those planning on becoming an APM Chartered Project Professional (ChPP) via Route 1!

Another huge advantage to this Project Management MSc, is that you can study entirely online, allowing you to learn alongside your current project role or other commitments you may have.

To truly understand what the course is like, we asked our Sales & Marketing Director, Phil Jefferies, to answer some questions about his experience of the online Project Management MSc with York St John University…

Why did you decide to undertake the MSc in Project Management?

I had completed a Batchelors degree in the early 2000’s and had always wanted to undertake a Master’s degree.  Having completed the APMP (Now APM PMQ) in 2015 and with a background in Project and Programme Management, I saw this degree and wanted to do it.

How did the MSc benefit your career and your organisation?

The MSc helped me look into the strategic areas of project management which enabled to me to engage with Project Professionals on the course and also at work.  This allowed different levels of conversation and understanding of requirements.  I completed my Capstone Project on the impact of COVID19 on Project Delivery Organisations in respect of training.  The research of which fed into the organisations business plan and enabled it to make key strategic decisions.

How did you find the MSc whilst also working full time?

It is all about rhythm. Once I found a routine of two evening a week to allocate to the learning it wasn’t burdensome at all.  In fact, once the Capstone was complete and submitted, I actually missed the study!

How did you find the online delivery of the MSc?

Excellent.  The course is set up to provide flexibility and the weekly topics can be completed at any time.  Sometimes I found reading the course notes useful, whereas other times I would listen to the audio recording whilst out on a walk or travelling.  The use of Moodle helped you engage with others in your group and share thoughts, ideas and feedback.

What would your advice be looking to take the MSc?

The MSc in Project Management is an excellent way to continue your professional development.  The modules help you focus in on key strategic areas of project management and look at up-to-date case studies of projects and project leaders. It given me greater insights into different areas of projects that I wouldn’t ordinarily have been involved in.  Engage in the weekly topics and take on board the tutor feedback on assignments and you will see benefits not just in terms of knowledge but also research and writing skills too.
