Blended Learning in Project Management – a white paper

Back in 2001, Harvi Singh and Chris Read from Centra Software asked the following questions that are 100% valid today and are easily transferred to the Project Management world: What impact would it have on your organization if you could significantly shorten the time to delivery of projects? What if you could give your sales and service staff 2-4% more time each year to work with their clients? What if you could  provide project management training that is more personalized and effective than what you are buying today, yet far less expensive? What if your top performers could immediately leverage their expertise across the organization without impacting their personal productivity?

I would also add a couple of questions of my own: what if you could achieve qualification targets and benchmarks while losing up to 67% fewer days per learner? What if you could embed learning into your own LMS and give almost instant access to knowledge for your entire organization? The rapid developments in the last 10 years of how we understand learning patterns, how we can combine learning theory with technology and how we can now achieve far greater reach for less money are showcased particularly in the online and blended learning arenas.

Enlightened organizations today are finding that effective online training models are not simply a transfer of older, traditional training models into a digital environment; the copy and paste of classroom materials into an html format or similar. Rather the effective training model uses new approaches to knowledge transfer, performance support, learner engagement and proof of knowledge gained in order to reach the desired educational targets.

Singh and Reed (2001) stated “By focusing on the specific business objective, rather than the learning technology, we are given the opportunity to fundamentally rethink how we design and deliver learning programs. This re-thinking also allows us to break free from the concept of a “course” and consider approaches that provide a continuous learning process with active participation by the entire organisation in sharing, teaching and mentoring mission-critical knowledge.”

The development of cutting edge online learning using the latest research in educational psychology and technology added to hosting options and embedded systems brings this last paragraph into the here and now.
