How to Become a Project Manager

Obsessed with your diary? Have a strong attention to detail? – then becoming a Project Manager could be the perfect career move for you. Depending on the project, responsibilities can cover all aspects from the design stage through to completion and handover to the client.

Project managers ensure that the client’s requirements are met, the project is completed on time and within budget and that everyone else is doing their job properly.

The responsibilities of the Project Manager can vary across industries, but will generally include the following;
  • Executing, monitoring, controlling and closing a project
  • Creating and implementing schedules to meet deadlines
  • Cost estimation and budget development
  • Team structuring and resourcing
  • Performing quality assurance
  • Managing and mitigating risk

To become a Project Manager you will need to be able to lead a team, so superior management skills, and the ability to motivate and delegate tasks is essential.   • Gain a Project Management Qualification /Certification – The APMP is one of the most well known project management credentials in the UK and is the widely accepted standard for demonstrating a professional level of competence in project management.   • Participate in LinkedIn Groups – LinkedIn groups are a free, effective way to network with like-minded professionals. There are a lot of project management groups which all have interesting and informative discussions.
  • Read Blogs – There are thousands of project management articles and blogs on the web. Commit to reading a few on a daily basis – there is unlimited information for you to digest in these. 20|20 post regular news/blog articles covering wide subject matter, aimed at helping all those in the project management profession.
  • Utilise Twitter – whether you’re a novice or experience twitter user, use 10 minutes per day running through a twitter search on Project Management to find a huge variety of information to add to your already growing knowledge.
