Understanding the new ChPP Pathways

Understand how the changes to the ChPP are make achieving chartered status clearer and more accessible for project professionals.

01 Nov 24

As you may know, the APM has made some key changes to the Chartered Project Professional (ChPP) standard, aimed at making your journey clearer and more accessible while upholding the same level of rigor and excellence that defines the chartered standard.

One key change is the renaming of the ‘chartered routes’ to ‘pathways.’ Along with this, the APM has introduced a new pathway (Pathway 3), which recognises globally validated professional practice gained through qualifications and experience across the profession. Notably, both the APM Project Management Qualification and the Project Management Institute’s Project Management Professional® (PMP®) certification are now approved recognised assessments for Pathway 3. This new pathway aims to make chartered status more attainable for project professionals worldwide.

With four pathways now available, you can select the one that best aligns with your experience and qualifications, each leading to the globally recognised Chartered Project Professional status.

Here’s a summary of the new pathways:

  • Pathway 1 (previously Route 3) – Designed for project professionals who meet the eligibility criteria but don’t have a recognised assessment.
  • Pathway 2 (previously Route 1) – Tailored for project professionals who meet the eligibility requirements and have a recognised assessment for technical knowledge.
  • Pathway 3 (NEW) – This pathway is for project professionals who meet the eligibility requirements and have a recognised assessment for professional practice.
  • Pathway 4 (previously Route 2) – For project professionals who meet the eligibility requirements and have a recognised assessment for both professional practice and technical knowledge.

Eligibility Criteria Reminder:

To apply for chartered status, individuals must be professionally active and meet the following criteria:

  • Proven experience in delivering projects, programmes, portfolios, or key control/enabling functions.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of current practices and methods.
  • Active involvement in the project management profession.

If the evidence provided is older than five years, a currency statement is required to demonstrate how you continue to meet these criteria.
