Looking to upskill in project management but not sure whether to choose PRINCE2® or APM? You're not alone.

This is one of the most frequently asked questions by professionals and organisations trying to navigate the world of project management training. At 20/20 Project Management Training, we’re here to help you make the right decision based on your goals, your team's current capabilities, and your organisation’s needs.

Understanding the Difference Between PRINCE2® and APM

To manage projects effectively, organisations need two things:

  1. A skilled team with a solid understanding of project management principles
  2. A structured method or framework for delivering projects consistently

PRINCE2® and APM each bring something different to the table - and together, they can offer a powerful, complementary approach to project success.

What is PRINCE2®?

PRINCE2® (Projects IN Controlled Environments) is a process-based project management method that provides a clearly defined framework to guide teams through every stage of a project - from initiation to closure. It’s a globally recognised standard, widely adopted by both public and private sector organisations across the UK and internationally.

Key features:

  • Structured methodology with defined roles, processes, and templates
  • Emphasises control, governance, and accountability
  • Highly scalable and can be tailored to suit projects of any size

Perfect for: Organisations looking to implement or overhaul a project management method and those needing a repeatable, consistent framework to manage delivery.

What is APM?

The Association for Project Management (APM) is the UK’s chartered body for the project profession. Unlike PRINCE2®, APM does not promote a single method, but instead offers a broad framework of knowledge grounded in best practices.

The APM Competence Framework defines the skills and behaviours required to perform effectively in a project role. The APM Body of Knowledge (BoK) The APM Body of Knowledge (BoK) defines the knowledge required by project professionals, covering everything from planning and risk management to leadership and communication.

Key features:

  • Focuses on developing project management capability
  • Promotes professional development through qualifications like the APM PFQ and PMQ
  • Supports a principles-based approach rather than a strict methodology

Perfect for: Teams and individuals looking to build foundational knowledge or develop project leadership skills.

PRINCE2® or APM – How Do You Choose?

Let’s break it down by common scenarios:

→ You’re starting from scratch with no method or skills?

Combine APM and PRINCE2®. Start with APM qualifications like the APM PFQ (Project Fundamentals Qualification) to build foundational understanding, then introduce PRINCE2® as a structured delivery method.

→ You already have project managers, but their skills need development?

Go with APM first. Benchmark their current knowledge using the APM Competence Framework. Training in the APM PMQ (Project Management Qualification) can help embed principles that will enhance your current practices.

→ You’re implementing a new project management methodology?

Start with PRINCE2®. PRINCE2® is ideal for introducing a common language and consistent approach across your organisation. Don’t forget to support your rollout with PRINCE2® training at all levels, not just for project managers.

→ You have a method in place but want to enhance your team's understanding?

Use APM as a foundation. The APM Body of Knowledge can refine and strengthen the application of any existing method. It’s a great way to elevate understanding and professionalism across your team.

Why Not Both?

In many organisations, the most effective approach is to combine the strengths of both APM and PRINCE2®.

  • APM provides the "why" – a deep understanding of project principles, leadership, and the project environment
  • PRINCE2® provides the "how" – a step-by-step guide to project delivery

Together, they ensure that your project professionals aren’t just following a method—they understand the reasoning behind it, can adapt it to suit the context, and are equipped with the skills to lead successful outcomes.
