Project Controls – What and Why?

“Project Controls are the data gathering, management and analytical processes used to predict, understand and constructively influence the time and cost outcomes of a project or program; through the communication of information in formats that assist effective management and decision making.” – Association for Project Management (APM) Body of Knowledge

Project controls encompass the people, processes and tools used to plan, manage and mitigate cost and schedule issues and any risk events that may impact a project. The importance of Project Controls is therefore paramount to a project’s success.

The Project Controller is a key member of the project team and works directly with the project manager to help define the project’s goals and objectives; create and maintain a project’s budget and schedule, analyse progress reported against the work schedules; and recommend actions to improve progress.

Project Controls – Training and Qualifications

20|20 deliver a programme in an exclusive partnership with The Engineering & Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB) which leads to  Certificate in Project Controls. If you are an employee of an in-scope ECITB company you could be entitled to funding for training courses.

ECITB Certificate in Project Controls – NVQ Level 2

The ECITB Certificate in Project Controls is a comprehensive programme covering all aspects of project controls. It is ideal for those new to project controls or control functions and constitutes a formal project control qualification which evidences a full understanding of all aspects of project control.
The course covers:

  • Nature of Projects
  • Project Initiation, Risk and Change
  • Estimation and Scope Definition
  • Procurement and Document Control
  • Planning and Scheduling
  • Cost Control and Monitoring
  • Planning and Scheduling
  • Cost Control and Monitoring
  • Project Control and Job Site Management

The program format takes a blended approach over 9 months, with 8 one day workshops a month apart followed by a final presentation day to provide employers with feedback on the skills and knowledge acquired. Between the workshops delegates apply their knowledge by working in virtual teams on a detailed simulation project, ensuring that the learning is applied in a safe environment. Delegates are also required to demonstrate knowledge of how project controls are applied in their own organisation. This unique approach ensures that studies can be completed alongside full time work and, crucially, that new skills can be applied in the workplace.

Andrew Baker, who has been in the Project Controls department of Saipem for 20 years said: ‘I found the course broadened my understanding of the whole process of project controls. As part of the assignment’s we had to speak with different people across the company. I found it refreshing that not only would project managers take the time to explain how they do things but they wanted to impart their knowledge’.
Kelly Brook from Mustang Engineering said: ‘Doing this course has given me confidence and has provided me with further understanding of the career path in project controls.’
